Neil claimed in a Kerrang! article that he punched guitarist Izzy Stradlin after he reportedly “messed” with Vince’s mud-wrestler wife. Axl said he wanted to punch Neil’s “plastic” face, referring to Vince’s alleged plastic surgery. Neil responded by contacting Rose’s management to try to arrange a live public fight on MTV. Neil claimed in his book The Dirt that “Axl chickened out,” which was a shame because “the only thing that would have given [him] more pleasure than a No. 1 record was breaking Axl Rose’s nose.”

Axl was born in 1962 in Lafayette, Indiana, to a teenage mother, Sharon Rose.

His father abandoned the family when Axl was two. His mother remarried a Pentecostal preacher, Reverend L. Stephen Bailey. The Pentecostal doctrine supported speaking in tongues. Axl said “the bible was shoved down [his] throat,” as reported by Mick Wall in W.A.R: The Unauthorized Biography of William Axl Rose.

Axl started singing in the church choir at age five.

He loved pop music, but his bible-beating stepfather wouldn’t allow him to listen to anything other than Elvis Presley and Jimmy Swaggart.

Axl told writer Mick Wall the three songs that most influenced his musical tastes as a child were “D’Yer Maker” by Led Zeppelin, “Benny and the Jets” by Elton John and 10cc’s “I’m Not in Love.

Axl grew up with Izzy Stradlin.

The two met in high school in Indiana, and later attended driver’s ed class together before starting a garage band.

Axl was kicked out of his home when he was 17 following a fight with his stepfather over cutting his hair.

He lived with his grandmother for a few years before relocating to Los Angeles.

Axl dated supermodel Stephanie Seymour.

Seymour slandered Rose in a Bazaar interview, saying, “Getting involved with Axl Rose? Clearly a mistake. It taught me a lot, though. He was a violent person, and I realized I never wanted to be around that again. The thrill of the whole rock ‘n’ roll thing wore off. I saw the worst of that world and it soured me.”

Rose got in a fight with Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love at the MTV Music Video Awards in 1992.

Krist Novoselic, Nirvana’s bassist, wrote about the incident in Seattle Weekly. “Kurt and Courtney were at a table with their newborn daughter, Frances. They told me that Axl Rose had walked by and Courtney started teasing him. She yelled, ‘Axl, Axl — you’re the godfather!’ Upon hearing this, Axl apparently got very annoyed, walked over to Kurt, and demanded that he keep his woman in line. Kurt turned to Courtney and sarcastically asked his woman to keep in line and left it at that. Axl then split. Of course, Kurt and Courtney were musing over Axl’s response in the context of society’s patriarchal tendencies.”

Axl has had numerous relationships with women. He was married to Erin Everly (daughter of Don Everly from the Everly Brothers) and briefly engaged to Stephanie Seymour. He was rumored to have been involved with Lana del Rey in 2012, according to Rolling Stone, although the nature of their relationship was never confirmed. A purported relationship with model Kat Mack was said to have been circulated for promotional purposes; his relationship with model Dyan O’Connor may or may not have been legit. In all, Rose has been rumored to have dated no less than 20 women (including Everly and Seymour) since 1990.
