Mr. Misunderstood, released without warning, is the most consistent of Eric Church’s five solo albums so far, and not just because it’s also his shortest. Its 10 songs breeze by in under 39 minutes, playing like the kind of classic rock albums that served as the model of its vinyl version. By contrast, its unwieldy predecessor The Outsiders had to be spread over two slabs of wax and Church experimented with some rather plodding metal, making it an exhausting album to get through, yet it still produced three essential singles.
