The American Music Awards started off with a bang Sunday, as host Jennifer Lopez opened the event with a 10-minute dance routine that incorporated many of the year’s hottest songs, including “Uptown Funk,” “Girl Crush,” and “Hotline Bling,” When J-Lo shakes it, you take notice.
Song collaborations were the name of the game at the awards, and that meant Demi Lovato, who sang “Confident” at the beginning of the show returned to join Alanis Morrissette for “You Oughta Know,” and the two of them killed it. Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth sang “Marvin Gaye” before *climaxing *with a make out session. Dubious at best. But hey, it’s Hollywood, right?
The show continued with Luke Bryan and Karen Fairchild (from Little Big Town) singing “Home Alone Tonight” from Bryan’s Kill the Lights, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and the seriously fabulous Leon Bridges debuted Macklemore’s new song “Kevin.” As odd as some of the pairings were, solo performances left some scratching their heads as well: cue Pentatonix taking on the “Star Wars Theme.” And for Gods sake, would someone teach Arianna Grande how to lip sync!?
Coming into the awards, Taylor Swift led the nominations with six, followed by The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran with five each. But things weren’t so black and white with the winners: despite being shut out of the Country Music Association’s New Artist of the Year a few weeks before, Sam Hunt won the (all-genre) award for Best New Artist, and gave a lovely tip-of-the-hat to “all back in Nashville.” Luke Bryan, who won Favorite Male Artist — Country, could have some serious competition next year! In what seemed slightly ironic, Taylor Swift, who once inspired the teen/tweener community to spend millions of dollars buying her albums, won in the category of Adult Contemporary. Seems that Tay-Tay really has grown up. And although they gave perhaps the most entertaining acceptance speech of the night, how the heck did Pitch Perfect 2 beat out 50 Shades of Grey and Empire: Original Soundtrack, Season 1?
All in all, the night was a seriously glitzy event with a few moments of seriousness, and plenty of musical performances, which is what you want in an award show. Here’s the list of winners:
